The open sea is generally of little interest to amateur divers, who rarely dive there. There are at least two diving spots in Malaysia - Pulau Sipadan and the atoll of Layang Layang - with drop-offs right next to the unfathomable depths of the South China Sea and Sulawesi Sea. The open ocean, with its invisible currents and its infinite blue, is at times alarming to the diver and appears to resemble a desert. Yet even this ecosystem, if visited at the right time and in the right area, can offer interesting surprises.
